The Experience
Step back in time with a visit to the picturesque countryside of the celebrated Romantic Road. Leave the Autobahn behind as you explore Germany’s famous ‘Scenic Road’ from Wurzburg to Fussen, a distance of 350 km or 210 miles. Along the way, you will see fairy tale castles, medieval towns with half-timbered houses, Baroque palaces and ancient fortifications. This is a suggested itinerary that you can follow exactly or alter to fit your desires.

Day 1 – Arrive Rothenburg via Würzburg:
Pick up your rental car at a convenient location for your drive to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. (Accommodation, Rothenburg ob der Tauber)
Suggested excursion ~ Würzburg Würzburg is a university town surrounded by vineyards with a number of wine pubs for you to experience. The Residenz in Würzburg, for many centuries home of the bishops who ruled the town, is one of Germany,™s most splendid Baroque palaces. Next drive to magnificent Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the crown jewel of the Romantic Road, a medieval town with fortifications and museums to explore and towers to climb – Rothenburg is a must.
Day 2 – Rothenburg:
After breakfast, we suggest spending time exploring the city before taking an excursion on your own to several of the surrounding villages and towns. (Breakfast & accommodation, Rothenburg ob der Tauber)
Suggested excursion ~ Dinkelsbühl & Tauberbischof-sheim. Today you can visit the historic town of Tauberbischofsheim, an historic town near Würzburg with one of the most complete medieval town centers in all of Germany. Continue on a few miles to Dinkelsbühl, another medieval gem with its four gateways and walls still intact, beautiful Renaissance half-timbered houses and one of the most important churches of southern Germany, St. George Church.
Day 3 – Rothenburg to Füssen:
Today you have a longer drive as you travel south from Rothenburg to Füssen along the Romantic Road. (Breakfast, Rothenburg ob der Tauber; accommodation, Füssen)
Suggested excursion ~ Dinkelsbühl & Tauberbischof-sheim. Day 4 – Füssen:

Suggested excursion ~ Schwangau & Neuschwanstein Today you will visit the southern-most section of the Romantic Road, highlighted by visits to the storybook castles of Bavaria,™s King Ludwig II Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. Füssen has its own castle, built in the 16th century by the bishops of Augsburg, who controlled the town.
Day 5 – Füssen to Munich:
After breakfast, you,™re off for your day of leisurely travel. We suggest stopping for a visit of the world famous Church in the Meadow in Steingaden. (Breakfast, Füssen; accommodation, Munich)
Suggested excursion ~ the Church in the Meadow On your way to Munich, take a slight detour to see the Wieskirche in Steingaden, a masterpiece of Rococo style built as a pilgrimage spot in the 18th century, one of Germany,™s treasures.
Day 6 – Depart Munich:
Your Romantic Road experience comes to an end after breakfast. Return your rental car and continue on to your next Avanti destination. (Breakfast, Munich)
