Isla Bolaiios

From Puerto Soley it is four kilometers by boat through the deep blue water of Bahia Saunas to the 25-hectare Isla Bolanos and its Refugio National de Fauna Silvestre (National Refuge for Forest Fauna). This park created to protect animals is especially rich in bird life. The American oystercatcher with its bright red bill and various types of gull dominate the coastal region.

A colony of 500 brown pelicans nests at the north of the island. In the south, 200 frigate birds return each year to raise their chicks. The highest point on Isla Bolanos is only 80 meters above sea level, but it’s enough to act as a signal buoy for both birds and sailors. Landing on the island is only allowed for visitors holding a special permit.
