Nounou Mountain Trail

Nounou Mountain Trail-East Side, turn left off Kuhio Highway 56 at second stoplight past Wailua River Bridge onto Haleilio Road. From the intersection, drive two miles and look for trailhead on right at telephone pole #38. The trail winds its way up, climbing through dense rain forest.

The moderate 3½-mile, two-hour round-trip walk ends at a picnic shelter on the chest of the “Sleeping Giant” mountain. Nice panoramic views of ocean, the Wailua River and Mt. Waialeale on clear days. Nounou Mountain Trail-West Side begins along Kamalu Road, Highway 581, in the Wailua Homesteads at telephone pole #11. The three-mile round-trip, 1½-hour trail climbs up the mountain and joins the East Side Trail, passing through replanted forest. The trail is quite steep in areas.
