Martha Mine

The original Martha Mine was discovered in 1878 and by 1908 it was one of the world’s richest. After closing down in 1952 the mine was reopened in 1988 as new techniques made the extraction of gold profitable again. However, the reopening was preceded by a protracted conflict with environmentalists who wanted to prevent further despoliation of the region due to commercial mining interests.
