Catlins State Forest Park

State Highway 92 enters Catlins State Forest Park shortly after the turn-off to Curio Bay. Though the road is now unsealed until near Owaka, it should present no difficulty to motorists if appropriate
care is taken. The first worthwhile detour along the way is to Cathedral Caves. This impressive cave system is only accessible at low tide but tide-tables are posted at the start of the dirt access road. From the car park at the end of the road (1 mile/ 2km) it is a 10 minute walk through lovely native forest and then another 10 minute stroll along the beach to the caves.

Scenic Walks

Between Cathedral Caves and Papatowai are a few interesting scenic walks all of which are signposted from the main road. One track (15 minutes) leads to the splendid sandy beach at Tautuku Bay whereas another nearby leads to the forested shores of Lake Wilkie. The latter walk is really no more than a 10 minute stroll from the road and is especially worthwhile in summer when the rata trees flower red around the small lake.
