Makepeace Island

Makepeace Island is a private hideaway a few minutes upstream from cosmopolitan Noosa Heads and is owned by Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Blue (Australia) co founder Brett Godfrey. Sensitively developed in keeping with the coastal wilderness, the secluded island has been created to luxuriously accommodate and entertain up to 22 castaways exclusively but with all the attractions that the Sunshine Coast has to offer just a mere boat ride away.

Makepeace Island, named after former resident and colourful local character Hannah “Shotgun” Makepeace, was completed in 2009 as a private retreat for family and friends of the owners. In July 2011 its doors were opened for exclusive use hire allowing others to enjoy the tranquility of this very special place.

Complete with its own riverboat to transfer guests, the 25 acre heart shaped island has a substantial two-storey open aired Balinese wantilan for relaxing or gathering of friends and family, 500,000 litre lagoon pool, a full sized tennis court and pavillion, spa facilities, theatre, office facilities and an expansive indoor bar designed for entertaining on a grand scale. Gardens and indoor decor include giantsculptures, teak, granite and stone finishes, volcanic boulder bathtubs, ornamental lighting and antiquities and furniture commissioned and acquired in Bali, Java and elsewhere throughout Indonesia.

Minimum stay 3 nights for standard season and 5 nights from 17 Dec – 15 Jan and Easter.

LOSS, DAMAGE, INJURY:

Makepeace Island takes no responsibility for loss of a guest’s or day visitor’s property, or personal injury. Guests and their day visitors are responsible for loss or damage of property belonging to them and for the damage or loss of property belonging to the property during their stay.

Specifically and also for your safety and that of your group and our staff, smoking is not allowed in or around the buildings, boats, bedrooms and other island structures (adequate outside areas are however provided).

You understand and acknowledge that guests will be required, prior to arrival, to sign a deed of release and indemnity absolving the company, its employees and representatives from all liability for death or bodily injury or any loss or damage that they may sustain or incur as a result of any aspect of the activities during their stay.

NOISE, PARTIES & BEHAVIOUR:

Makepeace Island is for registered guests and their approved Day Visitors only. The property is to be used for short term residential accommodation only.

Due to the restrictions imposed upon us by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, the hosts will advise you on arrival what is deemed permissible in relation to noise and partying.

The property may not be used for any commercial purpose or function without the permission of Makepeace Island. If after a warning, your behavior or that of your guests causes damage, danger or annoyance we reserve the right to ask you to vacate the property immediately and be treated as a cancellation inside 30 days.

It’s easy to find tranquillity on Makepeace Island, cosseted at Sir Richard Branson’s exclusive retreat on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Around this 25-acre island, as many as 22 privileged guests swim laps in the central lagoon pool (it’s lined by runway lights, for nighttime dips), play tennis and billiards, go fishing and grab Hobie Cats. The 11 bedrooms — individually adorned with Indonesian furnishings and artwork — are dispersed among the Bali House and three private villas. Dine on the freshest fare served in a number of spellbinding locations, including a secluded beach for picnic lunches.

In the Know

In the Long House, guests are encouraged to take part in spontaneous jam sessions with piano, bongos, didgeridoo and other musical instruments. Distance from Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY): 20 minutes
