Rurutu Island

The legendary name of “Eteroa” was given to Rurutu a rather atypical and in fact unique island. This cave-dweller island with a raised carbonate plateau, is fringed with vertical cliffs that plunge down into the sea and hollowed out with numerous underground caves and galleries that are steeped in legend.

Proud of its ancient “rock lifting” contest, a show of strength after the main competitions are over, Rurutu is also proud of its plantations where the taro patches, criss-crossed with canals, are amazingly well maintained.

Humpback Whale migrate here and are fun to watch.
