Napa was named after the Wappo Indian tribe who were the original inhabitants of Napa Valley. By 1830, settlers began farming the rich, fertile soils bordering the Napa River. When California became a state in 1850, Napa was one of the original counties. After the gold and local silver mines in the surrounding mountains became depleted in the late 1860s, some venturesome farmers planted the first wine grapes. They spawned an industry that transformed Napa Valley into a world-class wine growing region and popular tourist destination.
