Day 1: Arrive Chateauneuf-du-Pape Arrive by car to the Chateau des Fines Roches and vineyard less than nine miles outside Avignon. Built at the end of the 19th century in a truly medieval style, the chateau’s 11 en suite rooms are decorated in a country style with ginghams and in spacious and comfortable rooms. Perched on a hill with views for miles of the vineyards around the Rhine valley, this is the former residence of Marquise Folco de Baroncelli Javo, nicknamed by American showman Buffalo Bill Cody as Oiseau fidle” or faithful bird. Le Marquise was known across Europe in the early 20th century for his tireless work on behalf of the poor and the environment.
