Day 2: Heraklion & Knossos
Embark on a full day of sightseeing with your local guide. Visit the temporary exhibition of the archaeological museum of Heraklion that includes the most important Minoan artifacts. Continue to the Palace of Knossos that once belonged to King Minos. It was the center of the Minoan civilization until its destruction, possibly by a volcanic eruption, in 1450 BC. Excavations have revealed mosaic floors, the grand staircase and the throne complex. The palace is linked to the myth of the Minotaur, who is said to have dwelled nearby in an underground labyrinth, constructed to contain him by Daedalus and Icarus. Wine lovers might want to add a visit to the Boutari Winery near the site of Knossos.
